For some, jazz critics rank alongside pimps, politicians and pan handlers on societies food chain.
Too many critics were writing at a technical level that would require the years of training I have to remotely begin to understand the review. The technical review works if you have the desire to limit yourself to an audience of musicians with advanced degrees. I am not a critic. I am a Jazz advocate but all I can really offer is perspective with the hope you may take the information and take a look at the artist for yourself.The worst review you can give an artist is simply no review at all. I have played professionally and know just enough theory to be confident in my evaluations - is my word the final word? No - it's an opinion. I have worked in radio and television and various forms of print media for over a decade. I have worked with major labels as a jazz buyer for a large chain store for over a decade. My experience has given me a unique perspective in all facets of the music business and they call it a business for a reason! Just because an artist received a favorable review does not mean they are a critics favorite any more than a poor review qualifies the work as a sonic clay pigeon.
Life is too short for bad jazz, commercial rip offs, and artistic death by self indulgence. There are no absolute musical truths - simply shades of gray. Taste is subjective. Tone deaf lasts forever.
