UP AND COMING VOCALIST ASHLEIGH SMITH
SIGNS WITH CONCORD MUSIC GROUP
Winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition
set to release debut album in June 2015
For Immediate Release – Ashleigh Smith, winner of the third annual Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition (or SASSY Awards) held on November 16 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, has signed a exclusive worldwide recording agreement with Concord Music Group. The talented young vocalist is scheduled to release her first album in June 2015.
Smith was chosen following three rounds of voting by online listeners, members of the Jazz Education Network and producer Larry Rosen. Contestants were evaluated for vocal quality, musicality, technique, performance, individuality, artistic interpretation and ability to swing. The judges for the finals were musicians Christian McBride, Ann Hampton Callaway and Nnenna Freelon, WBGO's Gary Walker, and Rosen. In addition to a recording contract with Concord, Smith also received a $5,000 cash award.
“All of us at Concord are thrilled to be working with Ashleigh,” said Mark Wexler, General Manager/Senior Vice President, Concord-Telarc Group. “It’s an honor to be involved in the process of finding and nurturing new artists, and working together in the development of their careers.”
“Winning this year’s award and signing with Concord will allow me to share my love for jazz and music in general with a much larger audience,” Smith said. “I’m looking forward to working on my new album, and I hope I can let the world know jazz is still thriving – it still needs to be heard and it will continue to be heard.”
Smith, a 25-year-old Georgia native, performs throughout the Dallas area and received a scholarship to study at the University of North Texas. She has received student and professional DownBeat Awards and recently toured as a background singer with R&B vocalist Chrisette Michele.
