Vance Thompson's Five Plus Six Such Sweet Thunder 2014

The future for large ensemble improvisational music!

I leave off the word "big band" for specific reason as Five Plus Six is essentially a smoking hot quintet with a half dozen session ( for lack of a better word ) horn players sitting in. The end result for Vance Thompson's Such Sweet Thunder are unique and dynamic arrangements of some standards that are fresh and invigorating. The band is working without a harmonic net and doing it quite well!

A great many of the tunes you already know including, "Prelude To A Kiss" along with "Pannonica" but there are some eclectic surprises that work rather well including Dolly Parton's "Little Sparrow." Large ensembles are making a tremendous return to improvisational music and this young band based out of Nashville is no exception with some members actually attending school at UT. There musicianship is without question. Technically gifted and artistically proficient, Vance Thompson has hit on a new and exciting ensemble format that influence other bands for years to come.

Tracks: Pannonica; Isfahan; Little Sparrow; Ugly Beauty; Such Sweet Thunder; Prelude To A Kiss; Rockin' In Rhythm; Four In One; He's Gone Away.
