Diane Roblin Reconnect 2014

Reconnect from Diane Roblin is a spirited romp from a rock solid quintet we will hopefully hear from again!

Brent Black /

Straight ahead jazz, fusion and a little funk tossed in for flavor might seem like an odd mix unless you have a band that works off the same lyrical page that you do. Pianist Roblin has put together ten original compositions that are forward thinking, vibrant and embrace the spirited quality of classic McCoy Tyner. Artistic comparisons are often fraught with peril but it is always nice to have a harmonic base from which to experience the sound. The band happens to be A list, some of the sought after players in Canada.

Original compositions can too be like tap dancing in a melodic minefield yet Roblin pulls off a gem with a solo work embracing classical, funk and jazz - "Tune For Fraser." The ballad "Renewed on Thanksgiving Day" is another jewel that allows for her passionate harmonic movement to engage the listener with a style often more closely associated with some eastern European artists. The addition of the Fender Rhodes allows a rich color pallete of sound and texture."Fasten Your Seatbelt" is a foot to the floor fusion number that works nicely not only as a showcase for the band to highlight the immense versatility of Diane Roblin.

A most impressive outing, an ebb and flow that is nuanced yet never pretentious. Stellar!
