LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Adding to Prestige Records’ 65th anniversary celebration this year is the release of two comprehensive retrospectives of John Coltrane and Miles Davis’ recordings on the Prestige label, August 26, 2014. The reissues come in sleek new packaging and are presented in a rigid lift-off lid box. Senior Vice President, Catalog Management and Development at Concord Music Group Sig Sigworth says, “Prestige Records is one of the venerable jazz labels of American recorded music. As such, it deserves a curated and thoughtful approach to re-introduce these albums and artists in more contemporary deluxe packaging for the jazz aficionado to appreciate, and to reach the uninitiated who might be discovering these classics for the first time.”
Coltrane’s 16-disc set was recorded over a 32-month period between 1956 and 1958. The package contains a 32-page booklet, which includes a historical essay from Doug Ramsey and a session-by-session breakdown by Carl Woideck. Featured in this collection, playing alongside Coltrane, are some of the jazz greats, including Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Zoot Sims and Red Garland.
Davis’ 8-disc set includes his entire recordings for the Prestige label. The package contains the 17 recording sessions made between early 1951 and late 1956 and contains a 64-page illustrated booklet that includes rare photographs, full discographical details, and an extensive essay and analysis of each session by Dan Morgenstern, Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Featured in this collection are some of the most influential jazz artists of all time including Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz, as well as the original Davis Quintet: John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.
These collector’s box sets are two in a series of special 2014 releases commemorating the 65th anniversary of Prestige Records and the 90th birthday of legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Concord Music Group’s tribute to the revered jazz label features a plethora of special reissues, a new video series and a website dedicated to Prestige and its incredible roster of groundbreaking artists. The year culminates with a 90th-birthday celebration honoring Van Gelder, who made a monumental contribution to the label and to jazz in general.
