Mitch Shiner wants to bring big band back to the people...I believe he will! Drummer, vibraphonist and percussionist Mitch Shiner is releasing an outside the box big band smoker that seems destined to turn some heads in short order. Recorded on the Wayne Wallace label Patois, Shiner offers up an eclectic and highly accessible release Fly! The tunes range from engaging originals to some surprising covers from artists such as Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball" to the Disney classic "When You Wish Upon A Star." The Bloomingtones are an 18 piece swing fest that can roll with any large ensemble!
The arrangements are dynamic, inventive and incredibly colorful. The rich flavor of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" pairs nicely against the vibrant "6:20 Shuffle." The opener "Dragon Express" has Shiner's drummers announcing the listener to simply set back and see where the music can take you. Predictability has been the constant knock on big band. Over the last five years there has been a dramatic turn around in a genre that seems to have been placed in the jazz witness protection program. Under the watchful eye of trombone master Wayne Wallace who produced the release there is little doubt that Mitch Shiner has the chops to push big band back to the forefront of popular improvisational music.
Well above average, you got to give it to him!
