Music Icon Ginger Baker Debut on Motéma with WHY?  Ginger Baker was once considered the musician least likely to survive the '60s. The legendary drummer's first new album in 16 years, WHY? follows the release of the award-winning 2012 documentary about the reclusive star, Beware of Mr. Baker. Featured in Rolling Stone and the Wall Street Journal, Why? showcases Baker's lifelong embrace of and reverence for jazz. Baker's band featuring saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, bassist Alec Dankworth and African percussionist Abass Dodoo will tour North America June 14 - 30 with its New York stop at BB King's Blues Club June 25-26.
 
JUNE 24th RELEASE 
Cuban Elio Villafranca Featured at Annual Jazz Journalist Awards Ceremony and at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Where He'll Accept the Swing Award. Cuban pianist/composer/bandleader Elio Villafranca is being touted as the next hot thing in jazz. Featured in May at the all-star Nuevo Latino show featuring Pedrito Martinez among others and at the annual Jazz Journalist Awards ceremony June 11, Elio premiered his CD Caribbean Tinge (Live at Dizzy's) at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola with the Jass Syncopators. Featuring Greg Tardy and Steve Turre and a Cuban dancer, Elio wowed the capacity crowds all weekend long and will return to JALC June 23 to accept the first annual Swing! Award alongside other young jazz stars, Cecille McLoran Salvant and Jonathan Batiste.  
   
Exit 0 International Jazz Festival Kicked Off a Hot June for Motéma and Previewed The Exciting Kellylee Evans July Release I Remember When - It's Lead Video "And So We Dance" Premieres on Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy NOW! 
The first spring version of the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival featured Motéma artists Matuto, who got the crowd dancing at the outdoor stage, and Kellylee Evans, who danced on the tabletop at her electric shows, which ended up being the talk of the festival. Watch out for her electrifying debut coming in July & check out the video! 
 
Jana Herzen Featured at National Jazz Museum Gala / Motéma JJA Honor and Downbeat Critics Poll Pick.  Founder/CEO/artist Jana Herzen performed her lush composition, "Bali Holiday" at the first gala fundraiser for The National Jazz Museum, which also featured headliners Dee Dee Bridgewater and Museum artistic directors Christian McBride and Jonathan Batiste. Motéma was proud to be a sponsor. Motéma was also proud to be voted 2nd most popular jazz label by the Jazz Journalists Awards and to rank third on the annual Downbeat Critics Poll of best jazz labels.
 
Legendary Jamaican Jazz Superstar Monty Alexander Celebrated His 70th Birthday Before a Packed House at BB Kings on June 12.

Cult favorite pianist/composer and troubadour Monty Alexander sang his own birthday song at a raucous birthday party on June 12 as part of his 70-city worldwide Harlem Kingston Express Vol 2: The River Rolls On tour. Special guests included reggae star Tony Rebel and fellow Caribbean jazz player Etienne Charles and Motéma founder Jana Herzen presented Monty a delicious - and big! - strawberry cake.  
 
Sundance Institute and Skywalker Sound Selects Motema recording artist Ryan Cohan for a Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Lab Fellowship at Skywalker Sound. Composers and directors will explore the collaborative process of writing music for film in this lab that includes residency support and mentorship for the most promising new independent film and theatre projects and artists from the U.S. and around the world. Also a Guggenheim Fellow, Cohan is a pianist/composer whose arrangements from solo piano to symphony orchestra have been recorded by Ramsey Lewis, Joe Locke and Otis Clay. Sundance Institute is a global nonprofit organization founded by Robert Redford in 1981.
