Coniglio and Whitfield are the perfect pair, one of the finest trombone recordings available!

A quintet with a front line of two trombones is a bit left of center but the synergy with which Wayne Coniglio and Scott Whitfield play is spot on. Original compositions built around a melodic swing and a carefully chosen set of eclectic covers has Fast Friends as one of the finest trombone releases available. This is old school plain and simple, a straight ahead swing that is reminiscent of something discovered from the Blue Note vaults back when the label was slightly more invested in improvisational music. The rhythm section swings with an in the pocket groove that never lets up.
Both Coniglio and Whitfield are equally proficient as composers with the Coniglio tune The Coniglio tune "Fried Pickles" is a soulful samba built on the changes from "Soul Eyes." The rhythm section and especially drummer Kevin Gianino are on fire. The tonal quality of both Coniglio and Whitfield are text book, this is a master class for trombonists. The Whitfield composition "Flan" was composed shortly after the passing of Bob Flanigan and embraces a Stan Kenton like quality of sophisticated grandeur. The cover of the classic Steve Turre number "Ray's Collard Greens" is a modern riff on a blues that shows this most prolific duo can cover a great deal of harmonic ground in a short period of time.
Fast Forward is one of those rare recording that reviews itself. Raw yet well developed talent, a tight band and a syncopated swing will never go out of style. An old school charm with a new cool attitude, Fast Forward is an absolute winner!
