Mindi Abair lets it rip with her finest release in Wild Heart!
Brent Black / www.criticaljazz.com
Seems like Mindi Abair has been on the scene forever yet Wild Heart is just the eight solo release in a most distinguished career. Like so many artists, Mindi found herself quietly pushed into the smooth jazz genre which is nothing more than a dead radio format. Mindi Abair is a multi-faceted contemporary instrumental artist that can hold her own with anyone from touring as Aerosmith's saxophonist to pulling in a Grammy nomination for her stellar work on Summer Horns featuring Dave Koz, Gerald Albright and Richard Elliot.
Solo artist with pop and a highly sought after session player allows Abair to bring in some reinforcements for this release. Joining Mindi we have Greg Allman, Joe Perry, and Waddy Wachtel and that is just to give you a taste of what is to come. The focus here is like a laser, an edgy spirit that the musical co-conspirators embrace with an organic intensity not previously heard on other Abair releases.
This is the Mindi Abair release we have been waiting for!
Certainly not smooth jazz, not contemporary instrumental but perhaps a more pop based jazz fusion riff that allows Mindi to take center stage with a new found attitude and instrumental exuberance that she has shown before both on solo and session work. What may surprise some, Mindi Abair has some pipes! "Train" features her vocal prowess while "Game On" is a high octane trip featuring Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. If you dig a little jazz nasty in your diet than the blues infused duet with Keb' Mo' will be right up your alley.
Mindi Abair is all grown up and holding her own and them some with the big boys!
This could be the sleeper release for the spring / summer!
