Leslie Pintchik In The Nature Of Things Pintch Hard 2014

Leslie Pintchik  performs with an elegance and lyrical sense of purpose rarely heard. A new star for modern jazz piano is born.
Brent Black /
An improvisational collective. An all star lineup that buys in to what Leslie Pintchik is selling. Evocative emotional depth with a nuanced harmonic movement that is intimate in presentation yet fierce in execution. A release by the most talented of artists that might be relatively unknown by some and has eight originals on a nine track release is the equivalent of tap dancing in a melodic mine field. Not here...
Leslie Pintchik is an improvisational triple threat as pianist, arranger and composer. The standard is the Lerner and Loewe classic, "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face." The interpretation is sophisticated, artfully balanced with rich colors and an emotional undercurrent that gently blows the dust off a timeless classic in a profoundly contemporary fashion. "With You In Mind" opens as the improvisational version of the sexy little black dress and gradually morphs to a more passionate state with magnificent counterpoint provided from saxophonist Steve Wilson and trumpet / flugelhorn player Ron Horton. These are harmonic colors you can touch and will quiet possibly touch you. The ability to touch your heart and set your hair on fire in the same piece is a rare gift, Leslie Pintchik is that gifted artist. "Ready" is an improvisational conversation within this dynamic sextet, a groove built on the rare talent of listening often lost with some performers. The rhythm section is flawless with lyrical bassist Scott Hardy, drummer Michael Sarin and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi.
Can a former English literature teaching assistant find happiness in the turbulent and often overcrowded world that is modern jazz piano? I sure hope so because this is an artist the idiom can not afford to lose. There is an inherent soulful and soul filled quality to her performances on In The Nature Of Things that you simply would be hard pressed to find in comparison to some of her contemporaries. This release is already an easy choice for a best of 2014 list.
