In 10 short years, Motéma Music has established itself as one of the most respected independent jazz/world/soul labels on the international scene. A tastemaker label, it first signed Gregory Porter, earning two Grammy Award nominations and making him an international star, and introduced the trailblazing emerging artist Jaimeo Brown, whose debut was a favorite critics pick in 2013 alongside those by Pedrito Martinez, Marc Cary and Rene Marie. The label also partners with iconoclastic, veteran musicians including Monty Alexander, Geri Allen, Joe Locke, Arturo O'Farrill, Will Calhoun, David Murray, Charnett Moffett and Rufus Reid. Based in Harlem in New York City and founded by singer/songwriter/guitarist Jana Herzen, the artist-centered label has been recognized as an innovator in the increasingly challenged economic environment for record labels. Run by a multi-generational team of industry experts including Ken Druker, Fanny Del Sol, Robin Tomchin, Mary Ann Topper, Jana La Sorte and Haley Brawner, Motéma kicked off its 11th year last month serving on panels and producing showcases during the annual Jazz Connect and APAP arts conferences in New York City.
