Rules I live by...
The music industry is small. People talk. Word of mouth can be a killer yet the underbelly of the industry being, "what have you done for me lately?"
Networking in the music industry does not work. I have artists that ask me to point them in the right direction in regards to labels or booking people etc. and while I am happy to do it, I can not help you. You can help you...Work.
Networking in the industry "may" land you a gig or two but that is about it. By design, networking is flawed logic. While working on the set of American Idol, I had a long talk with Simon Cowell who summed up the idea in this fashion - "Why would someone in the same line of work as you do anything to help you advance and become their competition." Harsh...But the truth hurts. Cynical? No...It is the nature of the beast. Perhaps the second best advice I ever received came from saxophonist Darren Rahn, "Sometimes you got to figure this stuff out for yourself."
If you are a musician, a dancer or an artist of any medium then get off social media and practice. No one gives a shit about your views on the socio-political hot button issues of the day. You can only promote yourself. A critic can be a valuable friend but...YOU have to do the work.
Food for thought.
