Brian Culbertson Another Long Night Out BCM 2014

Brian Culbertson turns contemporary jazz on it's head...again!

In search of the lost groove, Brian Culbertson comes home to contemporary instrumental with an all star line up and material to match! While others are simply rehashing the same tired grooves and lyrical nothingness, Brian Culbertson is one of only a handful working the smoother side of the contemporary street that has the talent to elevate the music to a cutting edge status. Getting by with a little help from your friends never hurts and with luminaries such as Lee Ritenour, Steve Lukather and Russ Freeman the diversity of sound and the harmonic course charted by producer Brian Culbertson is spot on.

A deceptively subtle organic heartbeat takes shape as the ebb and flow of Another Long Night Out captures the smoldering pulse of a city that refuses to sleep. While the addition of a 38 piece orchestra may cause some to raise an eyebrow, the masterful placement of the orchestra coupled with a lyrical sense of purpose has this release moving down the melodic road less traveled as compared with some of Culbertson's contemporaries. Another Long Night Out makes contemporary instrumental jazz sexy again...this is a good thing.

The late Ricky Lawson turns in a typical stellar performance along with former Yellowjackets bassist Jimmy Haslip and arguably the best contemporary saxophonist in Eric Marienthal. Highlights are like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. Brian Culbertson is at the top of his game, some might say his creative apex but that would be selling him short. Dynamic compositions, a warm and unusually open sound for a contemporary release coupled with the best performers in the business has Another Long Night Out as the contemporary instrumental release to beat for 2014.
Some records just review themselves but humor me...
