A stellar celebration of an American jazz icon whose career has eclipsed six decades!
As I have often said there are a handful of artists whose career and contributions go well beyond the scope of a traditional review. One should never review artistic brilliance and ingenuity but instead celebrate the magnificent gifts these individuals have been blessed with and our good fortune to share in their work. Kenny Burrell is one such artist.
A joyous presentation of tunes that are special requests by fans, friends and some of Burrell's favorites tossed in for good measure has Special Requests (And Other Favorites) running through a set list that includes tunes from Freddie Hubbard, Duke Ellingon, J.J. Johnson and Benny Golson. The vibrant swing of the classic Golson tune "Killer Joe" gets the party started and the smoldering swing continues straight through with the Freddie Hubbard tune "Little Sunflower." Iconic standards such as "Bye Bye Blackbird" are artfully arranged with the trademark blues infusion of Burrell that has placed him on the six string pedestal so many players look up to. The great Jimi Hendrix was once quoted as saying, "that's the sound I'm looking for!"
Special Requests is Kenny Burrell captured live at one of the premier clubs on the west coast, Catalina's. While the sound quality is in keeping with the extremely high standard that HighNote is known for, the backing ensemble are four cats that have the same innate gift of swing that Burrell looks for and makes this recording a special piece of the Kenny Burrell discography. Kenny Burrell is not getting older, he is simply getting better!
