YellowJackets Christmas Peace Round HeadsUp 2003

I always say "this" will be my last Christmas disc review but I would be doing a grave injustice to one of the hottest bands to ever grace a stage in the world of contemporary jazz.

The YellowJackets - if I left them out.

Currently the Jackets have bass virtuoso Jimmy Haslip on a leave of absence as he wanted to spend some more time with his beautiful family. Peace Round is available and has been for a few years now but may be a little hard to come by in the traditional brick and mortar store. Of all the Grammy nominations and million selling recordings, Peace Round may well be the best YellowJackets release to date.

The set list includes:
1.Little Drummer Boy
2.Silent Night
3.Deck The Halls
4. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
5. Peace Round
6. The First Noel
7. God Rest Ye Merry Genlteman
8. Oh Little Town of Bethlehem
9. Winter Wonderland
10. In A Silent Night

The classic contemporary sound of the YellowJackets kicked up for the next generation. Originally released in 2003 this particular recording remains one of my top two of all time favorites and a release I highly recommend.

Easily a 5 Star recording.

Personnel: Russell Ferrante: piano & keyboards; Bob Mintzer: tenor and soprano saxophones; Jimmy Haslip: bass; Marcus Baylor: drums.

A sold well thought out and oddly enough a bit more on the traditional side, the YellowJackets raise the bar for others to follow - as usual!
