Aside from being joined by Juan Escovedo, and Peter Michael Escovedo we find special guests including Arturo Sandoval, Ray Obiedo, Dave Koz and of course the fabulous Sheila E. Together the Escovedo family and musical friends welcome you to the land of rhythm and grove with a smoking Latin jazz set that is bordering on something closer to a full blown Latin jazz orchestra. O.k. so I am a little biased when it comes to all things Latin jazz, unlike most I can admit it and will never apologize for it!
What is a review without a good back story? An interesting footnote here is that Pete Escovedo founded the Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet before landing a plum gig with Carlos Santana, yet another fixture on the Bay area music scene.
As we roll through an amazing set, "Take Some Time" is heavy on the horns but with that infectious percussive flair that screams Bay area flavor. Escovedo has long been known from painting from a deep rich color palette and his music here is no exception. Sheila E. drops in for a killer performance on "Solo Tu" while Latin jazz goes old school with the Frank Sinatra classic "Fly Me To The Moon." The letter "E" of course stands for Escovedo but it also represents an entertainment level that is simply hard to match in the Latin jazz genre.
I had a reader "complain" I handed out far too many five star ratings. I have a habit of reviewing what I consider to be some of the finest music available across all genres. So in keeping with tradition, a shared perspective and paying homage to the old adage "everybody wants to be a critic." Let's give a Latin legend the respect he deserves!
