New From Harmonia Mundi in time for Christmas 2012

Title: Passion & Resurrection: Music inspired by Holy Week

Music by some of the greatest Renaissance composers envelopes texts inspired by Holy Week and Easter on Passion & Resurrection, the award-winning Stile Antico's new release (Street Date: November 13, 2012). After releasing their first collaborative recording, the CHOC de Classica-awarded Tune Thy Musicke to Thy Hart with Fretwork earlier this year, the versatile group turns to an impressive collection of music from the 16th and 21st centuries featuring twelve composers. One of the central features of the program is two settings of the text "Woefully arrayed:" one by English composer William Cornysh (1465-1523) and the other by contemporary British composer John McCabe (b. 1939).  The latter was commissioned especially for the group in 2009, and its U.S. performance this past spring proved "that Stile Antico is more than up to the task of assaying challenging and chromatic repertoire" (Chamber Music Today). The piece is based on "a thoughtful, powerful meditation on Christ on the Cross" (McCabe) and is a tour de force of choral textures. "This is an amazingly rich text full of vibrant imagery," says Michael O'Donovan (bass), "Both composers bring out a really wide range of affect and emotion as the events of Good Friday are remembered."

"What a sound: perfectly blended, carefully balanced, its sonorities reaching back effortlessly to conjure up a vanished age of devotion" (THE OBSERVER, UK)

In the vanguard of the new generation of early music superstars Stile Antico carry on their unique tradition of performing without a conductor, which the young chamber group has "come to realize as a great strength" (Kate Ashby, soprano). The singers' ability to collectively feel the pulse of the music - combined with their stunning, transparent vocal sound - has earned them such honors as a twice-won Diapason d'Or de l'année, a Gramophone Award, and two GRAMMY nominations. They're frequent guests on BBC Radio, NPR, and XM-Sirius and this December the holiday special "Christmas with Stile Antico" (WGBH/NPR Music co-production) will broadcast on public radio nation-wide.
