Go big or go home...Could be the alternate title here when you have four of the fifteen tunes that are knocked out of the park by multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Mulidore who streets Jazz For The Ages on August 1, 2012. Giant Steps, Satellite, A Love Supreme and It's You or No One are the tunes from Coltrane and did I mention he plays clarinet on these?
Jimmy Mulidore also tackles the Sonny Rollins tune "Doxie" as well as some standards and well honed originals that make for a straight ahead lovers dream. Mulidore does play alto and tenor saxophone on the recording with an especially moving take playing alto sax on "Willow Weep For Me." The stunner is not only covering "Giant Steps" but pulling it off well and...on the clarinet. Most tenor players would think twice before even attempting the iconic tune on the original instrument much less risk the possibility of hitting the sonic land mine that could be triggered by the often maligned "licorice stick." Mulidore makes it look easy and adds a nice texture and his own solid riff on a timeless gem. Mulidore plays flute on one of his own compositions "Muldoon's Mood." The last and one of his finest Coltrane covers is "Countdown" where Mulidore again shows his prolific talent on clarinet.
Not familiar with the name? Guest artists here include Eric Alexander, Randy Brecker, and the great Richie Cole. A reed players delight finds Jazz For The Ages an apt title for a stellar work that runs through some of the more eclectic yet stellar jazz standards and bebop swingers you may run find.
Organic, eclectic yet a deceptively subtle swing that seems to linger...A winner!
