David Reinhardt is a baby faced six string assassin. Reinhardt is also the grandson of the legendary Django Reinhardt. Living up to the Reinhardt legacy in the world of jazz is not without its own special burdens but pushing all of this to the side, David Reinhardt and his trio are in fact the real deal.
Easily one of the two best guitar trios I have heard this year and while certain subtle nuances of his grandfather are present, David Reinhardt is clearly his own man who plays with the skillful precision of a surgeon and the heart and soul of the jazz gypsy that is his legacy. Colombe is dedicated to David's grandmother. This incredible release is now available in the U.S. for the first time and features Florent Gac on piano and organ along with Yoann Serra on drums and is an eclectic mix of original material as well as standards including an Ivan Lins bossa classic "Aparecida" and the Jimmy Van Heusen standard "Here's That Rainy Day."
"Lady" opens this remarkable release. A stellar ballad from Reinhardt finding its own organic pulse somewhere between wistful and melancholy. The subtle nuance of Florent Gac's organ work adds a well developed texture to Reinhardt's clean and angular articulation. An incredibly beautiful melody with shifting harmonics that linger long after the last note. The Ivan Lins bossa number "Aparecida" captures the intricacies of the Brazilian master with perfect precision and the warm lyrical flow one would expect from a Lins tune and should now expect from Reinhardt whose lyrical expression is on par with anyone on the scene today. The subtlety of the samba is a beautiful thing. "C" showcases the trio at their very best. The soulful organ of Gac combined with the finesse of Serra on drums only further enhance the virtuoso performance contained throughout this magnificent release.
Colombe is a true trio recording in every aspect with each member bringing their own distinct voice to the mix with Reinhardt's technique and tenacity for his craft well apparent. Musical frames of reference can be a dangerous thing in the hands of an amateur. While references to his grandfather are unavoidable, David Reinhardt is raising the bar for guitarists on a global scale as his own unique talent continues to soar.
