So from where you are artistically now, how do you see the growth of your ensemble format?
E.K. " My new upcoming project "New Ground" brings alto sax, electric guitar, and various percussion instruments from the Middle East into the ensemble sound. We will be exploring some oddd time signtaures 7/4, 7/8, 9/8 on top of familiar jazz standard tunes. It is a new project with a new direction and a new purpose."
As a drummer/composer - who inspired you? Where do you draw from for inspiration?
E.K. "All songs I write come from the people I love, mesmerizing things that happened along the way, different perspectives acquired through life. Seeking the truth, and everything/everybody else that came across. Technical side of playing is a different story I think. And the biggest influences on me regarding open-mindedness that has the most to do with being able to be inspired by the things I encounter, was meeting Terri Lyne Carrington and Jamey Haddad, a master percussionist both of whom I was fortunate enough to spend a brief period of time with.
What was the last compact disc you purchased?
E.K. "Maria Schneider - Concert In The Garden."
Robert Glasper Experiment - Black Radio."
