Rahsaan Barber Everyday Magic JMC 2011

Rahsaan Barber  Everyday Magic  Jazz Music City 2011

STREET DATE 08/30/2011

Today the mailman/woman/person brought me tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. Specifically "Everyday Magic" both the title of Barber's second release and the name of the his new ensemble.

Upon listening to "Everyday Magic" I now feel the best place for my tenor saxophone may be on the wall of the local TGI Friday's as Barber shows tremendous depth both as a performer and composer on this most solid yet adventurous of recordings. Barber handles the production duties as well as composing and arranging the entire set list and incorporating a more vibrant and somewhat contemporary spin in his work which I like to call "contempobop."

"Everday Magic" is:
Guitarist Adam Agati
Pianist - Jody Nardone
Bassist Jerry Navarro
Drummer - Nioshi Jackson

Keeping it all in the family, Trombonist Roland Barber ( Rahsaan's twin brother ) and percussionist Giovanni Rodriguez make guest appearances. "Everyday Magic" is an incredibly entertaining display of musical honesty and integrity which combines a unique mix of genres to coincide with some of Nashville's finest musicians.

Barber is a musical force in Nashville and is seeking a wider audience. Working as a performer, studio musician and educator, Barber is not shy about singing the praises of the Nashville jazz scene to his peers and since I live in Louisville Kentucky all I can say is he is indeed preaching to the choir.

Barber also completes the saxophone players hat trick by performing on alto and soprano as well as flute. This incredibly engaging release is a mixture of texture, tone and tenacity where genre's overlap and musical barriers are simply smashed.

The musical intent of Barber is to connect with an audience that may never have heard this kind of music. A musical frame of reference for a talent so unique is impossible. Influence include John Coltrane and Kenny Garrett but Rahsaan Barber is seeking his own sound and taking the musical road less traveled.

A journey well worth the trip!
